Best shower filter in the UK: what to compare before you buy
The chlorine smell goes first. Ten brands compared, and the lab reports behind ours.
What changes in your shower
Five practical benefits to compare, with the evidence and product details behind each one.
A less noticeable chlorine smell
If free chlorine contributes to the smell of your shower water, reducing it may make the smell less noticeable.
This is a practical change you can compare before and after installation.
Residual chlorine was not detected in the water leaving the filter. KEWI, certificate IW-230133.
Free-chlorine reduction under published test conditions
Residual free chlorine was not detected at each test interval from 1,000 to 6,000 litres under the published conditions.
99.9 per cent removal. KEWI certificate IW-230133, 24 April 2023.
Particle filtration before the spray plate
Ceramic beads and micro fabric are designed to filter particles carried through household plumbing.
A micro-fabric layer inside the cartridge catches sediment, rust and pipe debris.
Ceramic media hygiene testing
The ceramic media test recorded a 99.9% reduction in two test organisms after 24 hours of static contact. This applies to the media itself, not outgoing shower water.
The filter media is tested to resist bacteria growing inside the cartridge. KIFA, certificate KFIA-110.
Ten Vita Refill scent options
Ocean Calm, Blush Rose, Lavender, Pure if you would rather have none of it.
Vita Refill, £17.90. One lasts two to three months, depending on how much the household showers.
Published chlorine, media hygiene and flow results
Six samples across a cartridge's life, rather than one reading off a fresh filter.
Chlorine in the supply, and six samples taken after the filter. Residual chlorine was not detected at every interval from 1,000 to 6,000 litres.
The three reports this section quotes. Every number in it is on one of them.
Chlorine
Residual chlorine not detected. The result was recorded at each test interval from 1,000 to 6,000 litres under the published conditions.
Review the detection limit, volume range, sample and test method alongside any percentage claim.
How it was tested
Korea Environment and Water Works Institute, certificate IW-230133, 24 April 2023. The sample was the vitamin C filter cartridge. The method was the Korean Official Test Method for Drinking Water, at 1.5 kgf per square centimetre and 18 to 19 degrees.
Residual chlorine was measured at 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 litres of throughput and returned not detected at every one. The result covers free chlorine.
A cartridge that stays clean inside
The ceramic media was tested against E. coli and S. aureus under 24-hour static-contact conditions.
This result describes media hygiene under the test conditions, not outgoing shower water.
How it was tested
Korea Far Infrared Association, certificate KFIA-110, 20 January 2023. Method KFIA-FI-1002, against two standard test organisms, measured after 24 hours of static contact with the media.
The sample tested was the ceramic ball filter media that sits inside the cartridge.
A measured flow rate
5.0 litres per minute, tested to AS/NZS 3662:2013 by an accredited laboratory.
How it was tested
Singapore Laboratory Services, report 22608188-CLC, 19 March 2026, tested to AS/NZS 3662:2013 clause 5.1 and appendix B. The laboratory is SAC-SINGLAS accredited under ILAC-MRA. The figure is the mean across 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.0 bar.
KEWI certificate IW-230133, 24 April 2023. KIFA certificate KFIA-110, 20 January 2023.
SLS report 22608188-CLC, 19 March 2026, tested to AS/NZS 3662:2013.
Five things worth checking on any shower filter
Use these five checks to compare every brand and product consistently.
Who ran the test
Check whether the figure names an independent laboratory, manufacturer test or another source.
Ours: KEWI, KIFA and Singapore Laboratory Services, all three named on this page.
What method they used
A method name tells you what was actually measured.
Ours: the Korean Official Test Method for Drinking Water, KFIA-FI-1002, and AS/NZS 3662:2013.
What conditions it ran at
Temperature, pressure and flow rate all change the answer.
Ours: 1.5 kgf per square centimetre and 18 to 19 degrees, printed with the result.
How long the result held
Look for results measured across a stated throughput range, not only on a new cartridge.
Ours: six sample points from 1,000 to 6,000 litres, all of them clear.
Which product it covers
A figure with no product attached to it is a slogan.
Ours: each report names the product it was run on and the method used.
A longer version runs as eight questions you can put to any brand, us included.
What seven brands say about their own filters
Removal figures, laboratories and prices as published for the UK market.
The Suhae shower filter sits in the same table, read the same way.
| Brand | What it says it removes | Who tested it | What you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| AquaBliss | Chlorine, heavy metals and sediment, multi-stage media | No laboratory named | £25 to £30 |
| Hello Klean | 97 per cent of free chlorine, plus heavy metals, rust and odour. A minimum of 82 per cent scale inhibition | SGS tested across a 10,000 litre service life, and independently RoHS tested | £44 to £108 |
| Jolie | Chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria and scale | NSF certified, and described as backed by six independent third-party studies | $169, as published in US dollars |
| Osmio Water | Chlorine and chloramine, by vitamin C | No laboratory named | £37.50 to £59 |
| Philips | Chlorine and sediment | No laboratory named on the listing | £35 |
| Suhae | Residual chlorine not detected at every interval from 1,000 to 6,000 litres | KEWI certificate IW-230133 for chlorine, and KIFA KFIA-110 for the ceramic media | £17.90 to £135 |
| Weddell | Chlorine, PFAS and particulates | NSF/ANSI 177, the standard written for shower filter chlorine reduction | About £72 |
Read on 2 October 2026 and reported as published. Figures for Hello Klean, Jolie and Osmio come from the brand's own pages; figures for Weddell, Philips and AquaBliss come from UK retail listings and independent UK buyer guides. Prices and claims change, so check before you rely on any row.
Every cell reports published wording rather than our own assessment. Where a brand names no testing laboratory, the cell says so.
Match the filter media to your water
Start by checking whether your water uses free chlorine or chloramine. The answer helps you choose suitable filter media.
Carbon holds free chlorine on its surface. Chloramine will not stay held, so it has to be reduced chemically instead.
The media itself. Vitamin C is what makes the chemical reduction possible.
Carbon can adsorb free chlorine
Carbon adsorbs it onto the surface of the media, and it does that job well.
Chloramine needs a different approach
It will not stay held, so it takes a chemical reaction rather than a surface.
Vitamin C supports chemical reduction
Ask what the filter media is designed to reduce and review the test conditions behind its claims.
How local water changes your shower-filter choice
Hardness and disinfectant vary by supply zone in the UK. Check both before you compare shower filters.
Use the water company source for your own postcode to confirm the latest local figures.
| Hardness band | Milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate | What it changes for you | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft | Up to 100 | Limescale is not your story. If the shower still bothers you, look at the disinfectant residual instead | Thames Water hardness classification |
| Slightly hard | 100 to 150 | Light film on glass at worst | Thames Water |
| Moderately hard | 150 to 200 | Scale starts showing on the screen and the head | Thames Water |
| Hard | 200 to 300 | Thames Water says all the water in its region is hard, so London and the Thames Valley sit here or above | Thames Water |
| Very hard | More than 300 | Scale on everything, and a shower head that needs descaling | Thames Water |
| Scotland | Mostly soft | The regulator says most drinking water in Scotland is classified as soft, because chalk and limestone are not common there | Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland |
| Residual disinfectant | 0.5 or less, typically | Free chlorine leaves the water readily. Chloramine does not, and it takes vitamin C rather than carbon alone | Drinking Water Inspectorate |
Hardness bands from Thames Water. Scotland from the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland. Residual disinfectant from the Drinking Water Inspectorate, which also says most companies aim to stay below 1 mg/l against a World Health Organisation guideline maximum of 5 mg/l. Read 02 October 2026.
Hardness is milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate.
Hardness is a postcode question, not a national one
United Utilities does not artificially soften any supply in the North West, while Thames Water says all the water in its region is hard. Two neighbours on different companies can have very different showers.
Your water company will give you a free water quality report for your local supply on request, which the Drinking Water Inspectorate sets out.
Water UK publishes a supplier lookup by postcode, and you can start with what is in UK water here.
Compare marketing claims with water company data
Hardness and disinfectant differ across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and within every region.
Check any national claim against the named source for your own supply.
Material screening for SUHAE shower parts and vitamin C gel
SGS Korea screened the submitted shower-part and vitamin C gel samples against the stated ECHA candidate list.
253 listed substances screened
The submitted shower-part and vitamin C gel samples were reported as not detected for the 253 substances covered by the stated screening.
ECHA Candidate List published to 4 February 2026. All below 0.1 per cent by weight in the samples submitted.
Two reports, and you can check both
Report F690101/LF-CTSAYAA26-37108R1 covers the Aromica shower head parts.
Report F690101/LF-CTSAYAA26-37112 covers the Aroma Vitamin C gel, which is the refill in every Suhae shower filter.
How it was screened
SGS Korea Co., Ltd, Anyang-si, both reports issued 20 July 2026 against samples tested on 10 July 2026. Screening was against the 253 substances on the ECHA Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern published on or before 4 February 2026, under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.
Methods were SGS in-house, by ICP-OES, PLM, UV/VIS, LC/MS, GC/MS and colorimetric analysis. Results refer to the samples submitted. Both reports can be checked against SGS's own report checker at rohs.kr.sgs.com.
SGS report F690101/LF-CTSAYAA26-37108R1 and report F690101/LF-CTSAYAA26-37112, both 20 July 2026.
Screening under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Testing was commissioned by the manufacturer.
How to narrow your shower-filter shortlist
Use the evidence, local water, fitting, format and ongoing cost to choose the right product.
If you want to know how long the result held
Look for a result measured across a stated throughput range, not only on a new cartridge.
Not detected at every interval to 6,000 litres, KEWI certificate IW-230133.
If you are on chloraminated supply
Ask what the media is, not how many stages it has.
For chloraminated supplies, review evidence for media that chemically reduces chloramine, including vitamin C.
If you rent
Check that the product fits your shower and can be removed without permanent changes.
If you are fitting more than one bathroom
The SUHAE range starts with Universal at £29.90 and includes handshower and compatible rainshower formats.
If you are working out what it comes to

Common questions
What is the first thing people notice?
Many reviewers mention a change in chlorine smell first. The published test reported residual free chlorine as not detected under the stated conditions.
Chlorine smell is a practical observation you can compare before and after installation, although individual water supplies vary.
Does a shower filter reduce chloramine as well as chlorine?
That depends entirely on the media. Carbon holds free chlorine on its surface, which works well. Chloramine does not stay held, so it takes a chemical reaction instead.
Vitamin C is the media that does the reduction, which is why the Suhae shower filter is built around it. The chemistry, in full.
How long does a Suhae shower filter cartridge last?
A Vita Refill typically lasts two to three months, depending on household shower use. The cited chlorine test reports results at intervals through 6,000 litres under its stated conditions.
If you would rather check it yourself than take a date on a box, use a free chlorine test strip before and after the filter. How to test it yourself.
What does 99.9 per cent chlorine removal actually mean?
Review the report’s exact result, detection limit and calculation method. The cited test reports residual chlorine as not detected at the measured intervals.
The number that matters alongside it is the throughput. Chlorine was still not detected at 6,000 litres, which is six sample points into the cartridge's life rather than one reading off a fresh filter.
Are the prices in the table current?
Prices were reviewed on 21 August 2026 and may change. Confirm the current price and inclusions on the seller’s product page.
Is a more expensive filter a better filter?
Price alone does not establish filtration performance. Compare the exact product, certification, test method, cartridge cost and fitting.
That is the argument for reading what a brand can show before reading what it charges, which is what the five criteria are for.
Choose a shower filter using evidence that matches your water
In KEWI certificate IW-230133, free chlorine was not detected from 1,000 to 6,000 litres under the stated drinking-water test conditions.
